October 29 Steps to publish printers via Windows 2003 Group PolicySteps to publish printers via Group Policy: 1. Install GPMC on one domain controller. 2. Install Print Management Component by Add/Remove Programs.
After installing this component, we will be able to see the “Deployed Printers” container in GPMC.
3. Create group policies for the client computers. Considering some of the departments may have their own printers, we should create separated GPO for them so that those printers will not be pushed to all users.
4. To install printers to groups of users or computers by using Group Policy a. Login the Printer server. b. Open the Administrative Tools folder, and then double-click Print Management. c. In the Print Management tree, under the appropriate print server, click Printers. d. In the results pane, right-click the printer you want to deploy, and then click Deploy with Group Policy. e. In the Deploy with Group Policy dialog box, click Browse, and then choose a Group Policy object. f. Click OK. g. To assign the printer connection setting to the GPO, use the option below: o As a per-machine setting, select the The computers that this GPO applies to (per machine) check box. h. Click Add. i. Repeat steps e to h to add the printer connection setting to another GPO. j. Click OK.
5. Use the PushPrinterConnections.exe to push down the printer connections. a. Using Group Policy Management console (gpmc.msc), right-click the GPO with your printer connections settings, and then click Edit. b. In the Group Policy Object Editor tree, navigate to the following location: o If the printer connections are deployed per-machine, go to Computer Configuration, Windows Settings, Scripts (Startup/Shutdown). c. Right-click Startup, and then click Properties. d. In the Startup Properties dialog box, click Show Files. e. From a x86 Windows 2003 R2 server with Print Management component installed, copy the PushPrinterConnections.exe and the framedyn.dll files to this location and then close the window. NOTE: We should not copy x64 version from the server directly. For Vista machine, the framedyn.dll may not be necessary.
f. In the Startup Properties dialog box, click Add. g. Type PushPrinterConnections.exe in the Script Name box. NOTE: If you want to enable logging, type –log in the Script Parameters box. Log files are written to %windir%\temp\ppcMachine.log (for per-computer connections) and %temp%\ppcUser.log (for per-user connections) on the computer on which the policy is applied. h. Click OK.
